Desktop Engineering Review of Mathematica 4

Published August 15, 1999

August 15, 1999–“Wolfram Research’s $1495 Mathematica dominates the symbolic math landscape…,” writes Barry Simon, veteran reviewer of math software and professor of mathematics and theoretical physics at Caltech.

The review describes Mathematica 4’s new features from major enhancements in fast numerics to smaller details like the addition of color-coded parentheses: “While this isn’t significant for simple expressions, it can be invaluable for deeply nested parentheses.” He concludes, “Any Mathematica user, especially those who do extensive numerical calculations, will certainly want this upgrade.”
